Meet Our Team
Riverbend is shaped by a team of thoughtful, creative, and deeply dedicated women who bring a wide range of experience, perspective, and heart into the school each day. From literacy and inquiry to the arts, outdoor learning, and early childhood education, each educator helps create a learning environment that feels welcoming, dynamic, and genuinely human.

Founder & Director
Rebecca Halliday
Rebecca has been operating Riverbend Community School for the past 12 years and teaching for 16 years. Her dream has always been to create an independent school in our community that provides high-quality education that feels engaging, meaningful, supportive, and safe for students while placing a strong emphasis on literacy and authentic learning experiences.
She is passionate about helping shift the conversation around best practices in reading instruction and bringing the Science of Reading to life in classrooms in ways that help all children build strong literacy foundations, confidence, and a deeper connection to learning.

Program Manager & Educational Assistant
Kim Carey
Kim is a dynamic and caring educator who has a natural ability to make students feel comfortable, supported, and genuinely valued. Her calm presence, warmth, and ability to connect with students help create an environment where children feel safe to participate, learn, and be themselves.
Her role at Riverbend extends far beyond that of a classroom helper and includes supporting lesson planning, coordinating activities, and helping bring learning experiences to life throughout the school community.

Teacher
Karena Bowman
With more than 25 years of teaching experience across both public and private schools, Karena brings a wealth of knowledge, creativity, and leadership to Riverbend. She is passionate about the transformative role the arts can play in education and has dedicated much of her career to integrating drama, creativity, and inquiry into the learning process in meaningful and engaging ways.
Before joining Riverbend, Karena served as both a teacher and Vice-Principal at Murrayville Academy in British Columbia, where she further developed her leadership skills and deepened her understanding of school and program development. During her time in B.C., she also developed a strong interest in outdoor and nature-based education and continues to bring that passion into her work with students.
Karena has extensive experience in early childhood education, including many years teaching Kindergarten, and is a strong advocate for inquiry-based learning and ongoing professional growth. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a passionate and experienced educator leading our inquiry and Kindergarten programs.

Art Teacher
Heather Sprout
Heather holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and is a practicing ceramic artist with a passion for creativity, hands-on learning, and artistic expression. She has extensive experience teaching art workshops and community programs through NBCC and brings both creativity and warmth into her work with students.
With a background in childcare, Heather enjoys encouraging creativity through both the arts and physical education, bringing an engaging, imaginative, and active approach to the learning environment.
