Our Approach

Riverbend’s approach combines structured literacy, inquiry and project-based learning, blended mastery-based instruction, and engaging learning experiences that encourage students to think critically, build independence, and develop deeper connections to learning.

Structured Literacy & The Science of Reading

Riverbend’s literacy instruction is grounded in the Science of Reading and structured literacy practices that explicitly teach the foundational skills students need to become confident readers, writers, and communicators.

Literacy instruction focuses on the intentional development of phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written language through systematic and research-informed teaching practices. We believe strong literacy foundations support deeper learning across all subject areas and help students develop confidence, critical thinking, and stronger communication skills over time.

Inquiry & Project-Based Learning

Riverbend values learning experiences that encourage students to ask questions, investigate ideas, solve problems, and engage actively in the learning process. Inquiry and project-based learning provide opportunities for students to explore concepts more deeply through discussion, collaboration, creativity, research, experimentation, and hands-on learning experiences.

Rather than focusing solely on memorization, students are encouraged to think critically, make meaningful connections between ideas, and apply learning in practical and purposeful ways.

Blended, Self-Paced & Mastery-Based Learning

Riverbend’s blended and mastery-based learning model allows students to progress through concepts as they demonstrate understanding and competency rather than simply moving forward based on timelines alone.

Self-paced structures encourage students to develop independence, organization, self-monitoring, problem-solving, and active participation in their learning while teachers provide guidance, instruction, meaningful feedback, and ongoing support throughout the learning process.

This model allows students to spend more time strengthening concepts when needed while also creating opportunities for deeper exploration and continued growth.

Curriculum Design

Riverbend draws from elements of both the British Columbia and Ontario curricula to help create engaging and well-rounded learning experiences that emphasize literacy, inquiry, critical thinking, creativity, and deeper conceptual understanding across subject areas.

Curriculum planning encourages interdisciplinary connections, active learning, and opportunities for students to engage meaningfully with ideas while building strong foundational skills.
